Hi all, I am considering purchasing Preston Reuthers DVD set, he has the whole set up for around $600.00, it also includes the name writing set. I would appreciate any comments from the wire wrap experts out there before I commit to buy. Looking forward to your replies, thanks Waxman

Personally, I could find a lot better place to put $600. Buy a lot of wire with that. There are a lot of free tutorials online. Randy has one on here and akansan has one on her website. Jewelry-artist has some also. Or is it wire-jewelry? Just google it. Moods in Wire by Ellsworth Sinclair is one of the best books out there and it is about $30 at book stores. Ken

As Ken said, start with the tutorials here. You can even ask questions of the people that wrote them - doubt you'd get that kind of interaction with Preston. Check out other websites as well. You should be able to get all or most of your information for free and get a very good education.

I have to agree. I have bought a couple of $20 or so wire wrapping DVDs, only to discover I could get basically the same thing for free on the Net. That was before Randy did his excellent tutorial right here at RTH. Save your $600 for some cool rocks, buy lots of wire, look at Randy's tut and go for it.
I can't wire wrap worth a crap, but I still keep trying. Maybe someday my fingers will cooperate with my brain and one of my projects will actually be worth taking a pic of! ;D

Yeah, I have to agree. I say...if you can master the tut Randy did here, you will take off from there on yer own. It's free, has pics, and if you need help, he will help you. All you have to do is ask. I would also have to agree that you can buy a whole butload of wire for 600.00....use it to practice with!! LOL

Preston Reuther has a certain style of wire sculpture. I've seen the first DVD - maybe the first two? - of his set, and I have to say he had some great tips for handling the wire. However, you learn his style of wire sculpture, which is immediately recognizable by other wire-workers and fairly hard to adapt into your own style.
If I remember correctly, the $600 kit comes with all supplies, tools, DVDs, etc. you would need to accomplish all the things covered in the DVDs. It's not just DVDs themselves. And some of the DVDs were things like rings, pins, name-writing, etc.
My honest opinion is the DVDs are excellent for what they cover. I don't personally care for Preston Reuther's style of wrapping pendants, but he has some terrific bracelet and ring tutorials. I don't believe his claim that following his advice you can have a successful jewelry business that bring you thousands of dollars a week. There's too many people out there that wrap exactly like him now. If I were purchasing DVDs from him, I'd probably only purchase about 5 or 6, not the 30 some-odd that come with the kit.

I tell ya one thing, if I could figure out how to make thousands a week with wire wraps, I'd certainly get out of construction. Oh, and one other thing.....he's getting rich selling there DVD's. lol Oh, do a search on "Preston Ruether ripoff report".

My thoughts are basically what everyone else said. Preston offers a couple of free tutorials on his site. The bracelet tutorial is how I got my basic skills for bracelets. If you are new at wire wrapping, that is a ton of money to spend at the beginning. Name writing with wire is not too difficult. I have been experimenting a little with it. If you write the name on a piece of paper, you can copy the flow of the lines with wire. I'm sure he has a few specific ways to do it but you can probably teach yourself once you get familiar with the wire and your tools. However you chose to learn, I wish you a lot of fun. Hope you post pics and ask questions if you need a hand. PS. here is a link to a ring tutorial that someone had posted a while back. I kept it and a couple others in my saved file. It also lists some basic wire wrapping tools that you need www.dawnandevan.com/cabochan_wire_wrap_tutorial.htm

Thank you all for the very helpful comments, I have just saved $600.00 ;D I have looked online at some of the free tuts, but I think the ones posted by Randy and Adrian would be very hard to beat! I will be able to use these as a starting point, practice and apply my own style to them. Thanks to dbrealityrocks for the comment on the opal ring. Once again thanks to all for your help it is most appreciated, I will post some pics when I get started Waxman in Oz
