Hey all,
Just thought I'd share a few pics from our outing today. We were in search of marine fossils in an area about 45 minutes from our house. Some 30-50 million years ago (Eocene to Oligocene), this part of NW Oregon was covered by a shallow sea in which mollusks and other marine invertebrates were really numerous.
We were trying to find specific localities that were on a map from the 1950's so we werent even sure if we would find anything. On top of that, the rain started POURING as soon as we left so we didnt get many photos. We had a really great day though!!!!
The start of our trip.........we had to stop and check out some baby goats that were born recently.
In between rain showers we got a pic of another beautiful rainbow. We could see this one from one end to the other, all the way to the ground.
The area we were looking for on the map was a group of old train trestles. These were built in the 1920's for hauling logs. The line was abandoned in 1965. Some have had the tracks removed and have been converted into hiking trails. Others, still have the tracks on them and you can even walk across the trestles if you are brave enough.
Although we didnt find a lot today, we DID find the original collecting area and a few other spots of interest that we will be going back to. We ended the day sopping wet and covered in clay mud with big grins on our faces. ;D
A few small ones that we found....
Our favorite find.......its amazing how much detail these retain after millions of years. This one still has some pretty mother of pearl shimmering on its surface.
Thanks for lookin!
Shannon
