Well, my vacation is near an end and I figured I would give some feedback on the two places I tried hounding while down here. Keep in mind, I am a rockhounding newbie, so these comments come from a newbie's perspective.
Diamond Hill Mine (SC) - I had such a good time. There was a MAGMA group there and everybody was nice and helpful. This place is great for the beginner as there is plenty to find right on the ground. Great time and some great crystals also.
Graves Mountain (GA) - What a disappointment. Pretty much everything was a let-down. I was told to come today and that some digging would be done prior. What I was not told was that the main mine would be off-limits and no prep would be done. After a 2.5 hour drive, I couldn't just say "nevermind" so we just wasted the day for the most part. The back mine was mostly junk and I felt a bit misled. Ah well, I know I won't be back again so no matter.
All in all, I loved being outdoors and looking for rocks. If the Graves Mountain trip never happened, I would have had just as much fun, if not more. That one kinda took away some of the fun. Oh well.

Larry I am glad you had fun at Diamond hill digging with us MAGMA nuts. Sorry that you did not like Graves it is really a awesome place with a LONG list of specimens that can be found there. The lower pit is great with the Rutile, but the upper pit has Lazurite, Iridescent Hematite, Pyrite, Kyanite, Quartz crystals and lots more.
MAGMA will have another 3 day dig at Diamond Hill on April 30-May 2 this is after the owner has a machine dig so there is lots of new material to go thru. Anybody that can make needs to come we have a great time. Keith

Keith, were you there at Diamond Hill? There was a gentleman Steve that was very helpful and even gave me a skeletal speciman.
The one bit of luck at Graves was the 2 lazulite boulders we found next to each other. With how soft the material is in pieces I thought "no problem"... it was a problem lol. After getting a bigger sledge, we managed some chinks but I would have loved the whole boulder.
