I told you all about Maddie, the only person local I can get rock from. Business is slow for her, she does the flea market only on Sat & Sun. She has buckets of rocks she collected up over the years to sell. What I would like to do is offer to help her sell her rocks. I could take pics of what she has or I could just do surprise boxes. I myself have no idea of what is in those buckets but I sure would like to look. I could then make it available to anyone here who would be interested. I have to talk to her & see what she wants for either the buckets or prices for individual pieces. I have already gotten some nice stuff from her. I could in exchange make a small amount of money to support my habit or I could get ......more rocks in exchange from her for helping her sell what she has. Just let me know what you all think! Thanks - Donnie

Need to know what she has and how much she wants for it. Pics would be nice but not absolutely necessary.

I just talked to her & she was very happy & enthusiastic for the idea. She is going to start going through her jars & buckets, she also has boxes. I will try sometime this week to go to her house & give her a hand. Getting me out of Key Largo is like trying to pull someones teeth out. But in this case I will make an exception. I excited just to see what she has so as soon as I have more info I will post it here along with pics. One thing I know she has is a bucket of agatized coral fingers. She says it's something you aren't allowed to get anymore. I don't know that much about that myself but maybe somebody else does.

I think it's a great idea. Obviously, you have gotten some great stuff from her and there will be at least a few treasures amongst her collection. Someone will want some of it--probably me!

Sounds like you're going to have some fun goping through the collection with her.
I wonder hwy agatized coral fingers wouldn't be available anymore? They're already dead... Maybe it's on private land?

You should suggest she order FRB's and make up box loads. Then figure prices as a box with shipping included. Otherwise you have to weigh and sell by the lb. I'd sort the better stuff and try to get more. The other alternative would be assortments but depending on material box price would be less. Also have her dtermine a price that allows her to pay you a percentage. Payment in rock would be easier. Something like 2 boxes for every eight you can sell for her.

As usual, John your suggestions are very good! I did already think of the flat rate boxes. The real challenge is going to be going through what she has and organizing it so everybody else can see what she has. But then again, maybe it won't be that bad. She is an old rock hound & supposed to be a gemologist as well, but sometimes even she is not sure about what she's got. Thanks very much for your input. Donnie

Hi Donnie, the coral fingers you talked about is probably Tampa Bay Coral. A few years ago, they made it illegal to collect it anymore. I guess it was starting to get depleted and (they)decided to keep what is left as is. After all it takes a long time to make agatetiized coral. lol There is only one place that I know that still sells it commercially and that is the Gem Shop in WI. They charge $20/ pound. Frankly I would never pay that much for it as I do not believe it is worth that much. I have at least five pounds of it, that was part of a collection I bought years ago. If the weather gets a wee bit nicer and I can get my camera and computer working together, I will post some cut pieces I have so you can see what it might look like inside. Anyone thinking of buying some from her, it would probably be a good investment. As it goes, the scarcer something gets, the higher the price goes. In my opinion, anything below $5.00 /lb would be a steal. 5 to 7.50/lb would be a fair and reasonable price. And over 10/lb I would be hesitant. I base this on what I know and if I did not have any and wanted to buy. also you can get some duds and it is impossible to tell until you cut it open. I have posted this for two reasons. 1. I have a soft spot for struggling old ladies, and I want her to get a fair price for her goods. 2.Let members know the value of the coral. Hope this helps, Daniel
