If you do go to Mexico, go way south. I have been to Mexico about 25 times. Twice this past year. The Northern resort towns (Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan) are rougher then I have ever seen them. When we were in Puerto Vallarta I have never been offered drugs so many times in my life as I was in those 2 weeks. If you left the resort after dark you were often asked by able bodied men who were obviously high for money so they could buy drugs (they actually said what they wanted the money for). It didn't make you feel safe. My parents just got back from Mazatlan. 2 tourists were shot while they were there. Luckly both were non fatal. A large cache af ammunition was also found in one of the beaches while they were there.
The last time I was down was way south in Huatulco. It was still the laid back, friendly, safe place to go on holidays that originally made me want to go to Mexico as many times as I have. As far as the more northern resorts go though, I will not be going back until this drug problem is at least less violent. I will keep going further south for the now (hopefully it stays safe). It is a shame really though, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta both have way better rock collecting than Huatulco.
