I just bought one recently and got the Dremel 300. It can be mounted to the Dremel Workstation if you want to adapt it into a drill press, or adapt it to a hands-free grinder.
There is a newer Dremel 4000 model available that will allow for more tool atachments, but you will not use them for lapidary.

been reading that the Dremel workstation isn't good for precision drilling. Any thoughts/comments on this. I want to drill holes in small agates to run threads through them. Would I be much better served with a straight drill press?

I bought a Dremel 2 years ago ,but I always use a ordanary DIY drill pressfor drilling, the Bits last longer (up to 4 X I find)
Always drill with the drill bit under water ,
There is a excelent tutorial on drilling rocks on RTH

Dr. Joe, or anyone else for that matter, do you know if the dremel bits fit in those flexible shaft tools? I've got literally hundreds of dremel bits, grinders, cutting tools, etc., but would like to move to a hanging flex-shaft tool but don't want to have to buy all new bits since mine are brand new.
Also on that CE model at harbor freight, it says 15k rpm, but isn't it a variable speed tool???

Foredom flex shafts have several available hand pieces. The#30 adjusts from zero to pretty large so will take any bits that fit the Dremel. If buying a Dremel you need a keyless chuck model to hold the smaller drills.

I had to replace mine fairly recently and went with a model 300. Happy with it, for the most part. I don't use it for rocks, though. The biggest difference that I saw was that the 300 gets you into the variable speed model and includes more bits. The 4000 seemed a little bit better, and would have probably went with that if my Ace Hardware had it in stock. The Multimax (I think that's what it was called) looked like it was a fairly new design and was much more flexible...but it was also twice the price.

Hi The Dremel I have the drill bits are 2 .25mm and the collet fits these
a lot of small bits are 3mm and I have a collet that fits them I dont know if it came with the Dremel or not
a lot of small drills use collets of different sizes rather than a adjustable chuck

Jack, I was referring to the really small wire drills (3/4mm, 1 mm, etc.). I don't think collets that small are available. My Dremel came with the flex shaft which has a keyless chuck. The keyless chuck closes to zero. The keyless chuck is same thread as machine so can be screwed right on the Dremel if flex shaft isn't desired.

(my first post ) They certainly make very tiny collets! I use them all the time I have a 1.5mm and one that goes to zero. Annoying to have to change them all the time but they work! I use a cheap chinese "rotary tool" its a Dremel-like tool that cost only 30 bucks and runs like a champ with zero read out. I have 3 real dremels and use the cheapy at my bench go figure.
