Howdy folks, Just a few pics of the small amount of stuff I found at the San Antonio show. For some reason, I seem to be enjoying a fascination with Rio Grande agate lately so that's what most of these are. Thanks for looking.....Mel Rio Grande Moss Agate. Lost the sun so these don't do the slabs justice colorwise. West Texas golden plume: Woodward Peanut Agate: Black and White palm and some wood my wife liked for a pendant: Rio Grande Plume rough from Matt Dillon. He had some of this cut and it was spectacular so I thought I'd try a little rough. Now I just have to figure how to vice the biscuits up and they are smooth and thin. Probably have to glue them to blocks to split them open.

*L* Yep, Mat Dillon does sell rocks and he's also a private eye and a very cool fellow who is a wizard about agate and Texas agate in particular. His flickr site ( dardilrocks) puts every other plume agate site to shame. Check it out. His collection is truly incredible.....Mel

You found some neat stuff, too, Mel. I handled some of that black and white palm, and considered buying it, but had already busted my budget, so I had to put it back.

Rio Grande is one of my favorites, you can find just about any type of agate out of that river!

For some reason, Rio Grande Agate seems to be looked down upon by the lapidary world, but you can find some awesome colors, patterns, plumes and inclusions in them!

i have contacted dardilrocks and talked to him often.... i wanted to buy some of his plumes, but they are one of a kind that he doesn't find often.... darn. Just a couple of pieces for cabs would have been nice. he's a very nice guy.

Mary Ann, You're sure right. Matt is a very nice guy and so willing to share collecting information too. I learned a lot from him in just a brief conversation and hope to chat more with him next year.
Riverbend: I totally agree with you n the Rio Grande stuff. All the junk has been tumbled off the nodules and what's left is exceptionally solid material plus, as you've said, there is a great variety of material to be found and much is actually easier to find in the gravels than in the field in the areas in which it originated. I have learned through my conversation with Matt, that it's very important that the gravel comes from the higher, shallower deposits as the best plumes etc seem to have eroded out when the Rio Grande was wide and shallow. I suspect my Eagle Pass gravel comes from deeper gravel deposits because good agate seems pretty scarce and so far, I've found little plume or fortification types. Still fun to hunt though as it's like a big Easter egg hunt.....Mel
