Just starting my third week of a Malachite, Fluorite, and Chrysocolla load. The Malachite and Fluorite is from The Gem Shop and the Chrysocolla is from Dad's Rock Shop. I'm fiinding banding in the Malachite mesmerizing. These softer stones sure do grind down fast. I'll be posting the rest of the trip over the next 2-3 weeks. A fellow RTHer sent me some chrome oxide for the polish. Looking forward to trying it out. First up: The pretumbled rough. Next: After the first week in 60/90 grit. After the second week in 60/90. There are still some imperfections I'd like to get out, but I can't see continuing for another week in coarse grit. I'm just losing too much material. Given the softness of the stones, I'm thinking maybe a week in 120/220 will be enough to get the final little spots. The chrysocolla is apparently in some kind of matrix that is harder than everything else in the barrel. Heading into Stage 2. Notice how the barrel is already half as full after only two weeks. I added enough plastic pellets to make the barrel 3/4 full.

shaping up nicely , maybe someone else might chime in with more experience . but, i'd be cautious about the chrysocolla in finer stages & polish . just my 2 cents . though i've never done either malachite or flourite . --paul

You also might try another rough load with fresh material to get your volume up with rock instead of pellets.
I agree that 120/220 might be enough to get the material to move along as it is so soft. As Paul said, be cautious of the chrysocolla. If it doesn't seem to be shaping up as well as the fluorite and malachite you might be better off pulling it for a different load.
Looking really good so far.

Agreed on the Chrysocolla. I figured it would be ok until at least the prepolish stage. Definitely leaning towards pulling it in the final two stages.
I'd rather add more material, but I've used all of my Fluorite and Malachite. Other suggestions on increasing volume would be welcomed. I don't have any more material that is a Mohs 4 right now.

Pellets will work, but material is more fun. I also use ceramic media as filler - prefer it to plastic pellets.

Would ceramic media be ok since the stones are so soft?

It might be better to just do an additional load of soft. I would pull the chrysacola now. It can only damage the others with the small amount of shaping it has done, you will start seeing more cracks and chips out of the softer ones. You can try the ceramic and check after a day or two to see if it is playing nicely. You may just want to pull the batch and set it aside. Do a different load until you get more rough to do another load of soft to add to this one. Fran
