I have been running my UV-10 for some time and have noticed that I get rock mud on the screw threads holding the barrel down. It makes it hard to get the thumbscrew holding the lid off. Am I running the mix too wet or is there another solution that I am missing?

I take a toothbrush and squirt bottle with water and paper towels and clean the threads when I change tubs. That way the threads are clean and I prevent cross contamination between my fine grind tub and my polish/prepolish tub....Mel

I do the same as Mel and then use a little light grease on the threads. Wipe the grease off so only a very thin coat is left on. I have not had a problem with cross contamination of grit and the nut and threads don't rust. Tom & Debby

I had to get rid of the wingnut (thumb screw) and put a real nut on the threaded rod. A combination of grit, vibration, and numerous on/off operations caused the threads to cut and slip. Actually, it is so bad now that it takes two nuts to hold the bowl and lid down tightly. Soon I will have to replace the threaded rod.
If the wing nut is too tight, put on a hex nut and use a wrench.

Darryl- I've been adding washers to get the nut up to where some good threads are. lol

I replaced the 1/4 inch rod with a 3/8 inch all thread rod cut to size and drilled the hole in the bowl larger. With the 3/8 inch you can get bigger wing nuts for the lid. I use a regular nut and washer to screw the bowl down to the platform and a wing nut and washer for the lid .
I also keep a small wire brush by my vibe tumblers and as a procedure when I remove the bowl for cleaning and changing grit I brush the threads down.
That's what works for me...

That's a great idea! I have about 10 feet of 3/8 (honest), I know what I'm doing next!

Randy,
It's an easy change. Especially for someone who is mechanically inclined as you are judging my your motorcycle and shop pictures. You will need to cut away a little of the foam padding in the center of the platform which doesn't affect the performance of the vibe since the bowl doesn't sit on the center portion of the platform. I used jam nuts and loctite to be sure things don't vibrate loose.
I also bought a set of stubby combination wrenches at Harbor Freight to tighten and loosen the nut that holds the bowl down.
