Here is what I made today from leather scraps from Julie aka My New Hobby. They are local first Nations (Salish) moccasins. Thank you Julie! Yes, they are very comfortable, like kid glove socks on your feet, and they fit, since I made the pattern from my feet. I have added a photograph of how I sewed them, by hand no machine. Woody

Fran: A pretty good booklet on moccasinn making is "Craft Manual of the North American Indian Footwear" byGeorge White. Get it from the Crazy Crow Trading Post on line for $8.00 The first time I made moccasins, I cut them out in demin from by patterns, had my mother sew them on the machine, adjusted the patterns, and then made them from leather. Using Julies leather makes thin, soft mocs, that feel really good on the feet. You could glue two or three layers together with Barge cement for thicher soles. Woody

That is one awesome jacket! My hands were sore for a week just sewing the mocs. Hard to imagine the time it took for the jacket. Woody

Thanks! that took me one week to lace up, it is all stitched with fancy stitching in imitation sinew and the fringes and edge work is done in hand cut elkskin lacing. Its also lined with linen that was stitched in after I was all done with the leather. It was a hand buster for sure. The beading is just as tiresome and a killer for the fingers.

Woody, is there anything you can't do? Those are beautiful! You really are so very talented.
So, 2badfrog............I could probably whip a jacket out in what, 15 years? If I start right now? That thing belongs in a museum, unreal. Bet it's really warm too. The authentic Native American clothing I've seen on display and in books are really incredible, that jacket would fit right in. The beadwork is amazing.
I hope Roxy sees this thread, she's gonna freak when she sees these goodies......

There was lots of practice in working deer and elk skins prior to making this coat as I made frontier style buckskin pants and shirts for the guys that were shooting buddies of my hubby. I worked about 10 - 12 hours a day from start, preping the skin cutting the pattern right the way to lining. The bead work on the other hand took several months to complete. The eagle head took one month and was my very first attempt at this type of beading, the coat is also a first attempt at this type of work. I even made the elk antler buttons for it. The pattern is my own design and took several days of layout on the floor to get it right prior to cutting the skins. It took 2 1/2 full elk skins to make. this thing is seriously heavy at about 40 pounds! I would guestamate that its value is about $4,000.00 to $5,000.00 if it was to be sold Hubby would have to be deceased for that to ever happen
