Dear friends, I have recently started my first batch of rocks in the Raytech's Tumble-Vibe 5 and would like to contact other members of this forum having experience with this machine. If you want to read about my difficukties at the beginning go to the post sent by me on April 2nd with title "S.O.S.-blue chalcedons ina vibratory tumbler" mistakenly posted in the Totally Rock Tumbling Photo Section.
The machine is now seemingly working correctly. However, i have several questions:
1. the bowl is just over half full, I had more rocks in it and the rocks did not move just vibrated in one place, even now they get stuck, wedging one into another and between the walls of the bowl thus slowing down the motion. This happens every time I go and check - that is approx. every 3 hours during the day. Also the rocks move around in circle around the central shaft and also around their own axes in different directions. I do not get the tangential movement from the perifery of the bowl towards the center - as described by Bikerrandy in his post in this section "Instructions for vibe tumblers" and as I saw in the youtube video clip suggested in the thread for us to see. Is this typical for this tumbler or am I doing something wrong?
2. do you have the tumbler attached to something firmly? This was suggested to me by MikeS and I can see the benefit.
3. when I put the lid on the bowl and screw it down I dampen so much the vibrations of the bowl that the rocks stop the circular motion so I have to use it without the lid and the machine sprays small amount of the muddy grit, just small amounts, because the stuff is really thick and sticks well to the stones , but still it is a mess and I wonder if you got a solution for it? It must be very dificult to clean and anyway it is constantly forming...
4. the machine is VERY noisy, much noisier than the double rotary tumbler working next to it. And I thought I read somewhere that vibratory tumblers are quieter!
So I am not satisfied at all with this tumbler, fortunately it is not mine, but belongs to a friend who bought it some years back and never came round to using it and asked me to try it out. If I get to buy one myself it definitely won't be this one.
Thanks in advance for your response,
yorgos
