Hi All, We've been asked to go to Mexico to dredge for gold this summer. We'll be somewhere between Chihuahua & Sonora. Anybody have any info about "rocking" in this general area? Thanks, Jo

I've only collected in Jalisco and Oaxaca so can't help too much. I know don't put you rocks (even if they are small) in your carry on if your flying. Have fun, and be careful northern Mexico is getting to be kind of rough.

young lady,it would be safer to go to iran and pan and dredge for gold,i dont know if you read the news but chihuahua, sonora, most dangerous places in the world,,,all minerals including gold is property of the goverment, also dont think that you can dredge in an isolated place where no one sees you, they will see you,and what you dredge belongs to them, and they are well aware the price of gold,,,also gringos are great to hold for ransom, young lady i have lived in mexico for 45 years, and of all the places i WILL not go to is where you want to go to,,,not trying to scare you, just the facts lady,,,,,ab

Hire armed guards and wear a large Canadian hat or shirt.

thanks everyone for your advice. we'll be going with friends of ours who are Mexican. where they want to go, they're not having problems with the gringos. we're still mulling it over tho & haven't made any firm decisions. in the meanwhile, anybody know anything about rocks in the area? even if we don't go, maybe I can get our friends to bring some back to me. thanks again, jo

Howdy Jo, That guy, Matt Dillon that I met at the San Antonio show does a lot of Mexican agate hunting. You might go to flickr.com and enter dardilrocks to pull up his photostream and ask him about areas that might be of interest. He seems to be a wealth of info and likes to share his information. He's also a security specialist and could maybe advise you on the safety of what you plan. I know going into that area would give me give me pause. A good friend of mine is a retired border patrol officer and didn't have a lot good to say about the safety of the Mexican side of the border in that zone......Mel

mel.good post there, allow me to advise what some things that are happening at military check points,,,some dealers have a deal with the officers of the check points,,,any mineral is the property of mexico if you dont have papers giving you permission to mine or collect minerals, they confiscape your minerals, geodes or what ever,,,and then they sell to the dealers they have made arraingements with,,,another trick is,if you find a nice place where there is mexican lace they will let you collect and carry to your truck,,then they will stop you,,president of village or ejido or any ejidetario, which is any member of the village and they will say it belongs to the ejido,so you loose because you did all the digging and carrying for them,,,the dear lady said she had mexican friends, please dont forget the the most dangerous people for mexicans are mexicans,,,,also right now the most dangerous happenings is mexican narcs are kidnapping mexicans, wow i dont want to sound hard,,but many dont read mexican news, last year they killed over 10,000 mexicans, and this year they are ahead of last year,so i am not saying dont drink the water, dont eat on the streets,,,no i am saying dont go,,,,ab

Mexico certainly has beautiful material, but with the state of things down there right now, I'd stay far, far away and buy my Mexican agates online, or in Quartsite. The national guard will probably get called out to the AZ border this year, it's getting so bad the violence is spilling out into AZ border towns.

My husband says to tell you "Okay, okay, okay. You talked us out of it. We're not going. I think you're all right. I love Mexico, but right now's not a good time. Jo

My sister-in-law lives right near the AZ/Mex border and just last week a guy attempted to bluff her into letting him in her house, said he was hurt and needed help, turned out he had 5 others with him. Fortunately she has a big gun and called the authority's.
