Ok, I did the coarse grit for about three weeks combined in the two tries. Then I used new plastic pellets, and did several stages of grit, no luck with the cerium oxide polish, did 6oo grit, repolished, nothing. they feel smooth, some are getting small holes, what kind of soap do I add? I did not use a different barrel for polish...is this important? I am sure I rinsed them very, very well in between stages. I used the pellets to keep it about 2/3 full each time, added enough water to be almost to the top of the rocks. What else? Thanks, one day I hope to be good at this.

Did you use the same pellets during all stages of grits? If so you probably contaminated your later fine grits. SiC grit can embed in the plastic pellet. You need to keep pellets separate for each girt. Also, when using one barrel you need to be almost surgically clean when washing out your barrel. Scrub the inside of the barrel and lid with a stiff brush and soap and don't forget the lip of the barrel where the lid seats. Check your stones for any cracks and crevices that could contain grit.

That's why I use ceramic filler - won't carry grit from one stage to the next.
