Abby and I went to a rock show in Green Bay today, but didn't find much. Got the girls each a 50 cent grab bag and bought a piece of brazillian amethyst for Emily and Jennifer to share. Then we stopped at a fish/aquarium store right by the museum we've been going to off and on for years. I got a nice 3 lb piece of sodalite? there and decided to slab a few pieces off after supper. I also cut a few slabs off some blood stone I bought for making my nephew a necklace. Broke one while slabbing, darn it. Lastly I cut a slab from a piece I found in the landscape rock at a local store. This thing jumped right out at me, and I knew it had to come home with me. It looked almost banded with obsidian dry. After cutting I have no clue what it is. Kinda soft (well, comparing it to the agate), so we'll see how it cabs eventually. Any ideas what it is? I see that's not teh best picture, but the rough piece is shown too. Thanks for looking! Nate

The last one looks like granite, or a granite schist.

Brent is probably right on that last one. I was first going to say pet wood but on second look, it does look like granite. Your pet store find is really nice! Almost looks like a light swirlstone. I just love bloodstone and boy, is it hard to cut! When you get it to behave, it is fantastic! I can see some beautiful cabs coming from these! Fran

Thanks! I appreciate the ID Brent and Fran. I thought maybe some kind of wood too, but really didn't know. I really haven't cared for bloodstone, but I'm glad I got it. It looks like it'll cab nicely.

It'll tumble well too Nate. You got some interesting new material there. Jo

You will be surprised when you cab the bloodstone. When you have a nice piece of it, the red spots just seem to jump out at you and almost give a 3D feeling of depth. you will soon see what I mean. Fran

Thanks Fran. I'll admit the bloodstone for some reason creeps me out. I hunt, fish, and have had my share of spills. Not to mention watching my 2 daughters being born. Blood doesn't bother me, but for some reason the bloodstone looks weird to me....
We'll see if it's just the photos, or in real life too, when I cab it....
Stay tuned lol, Nate

That sodalite looks like the stuff coming out of Canada. That's some nice bloodstone, its hard but cabs very well. I'm thinking the last is a metamophic rock, like schist. Some cabs well and some just crumbles. Hopefully yours is the latter.

Ron, Mary Ann, Tony, and Brian - Thanks for the replies. That granite / schist looks a lot better dry. I hope it's not crumbly, 'cause it sure is pretty in the rough.
