That one really looks cool! How did you get the inside curve shapes? Do you use a dremel or something? Fran

Nice Christopher! Do you just cab it, or work your way down to the fire, with a foredom?

You sure were able to very effectively bring out the best in that rough. Great cab! Bob

Thank you everyone. I usually will rough it in on my Genie and then I will use my dremel with diamond sintered burrs to get any cracks and curves that my wheels won't reach. I will then go to the pre-polish side of my Genie and work it all the way to polish. I use Diamond Pacific Nova burrs to pre polish the curves and cracks. I then use diamond paste and felt burrs to finish it up.

Very nice work. I really love seeing your fire agates, Christopher! I'm assuming the rough you have shown here has been roughed out on your genie/dremel already. How do you find the fire in the rough before working it? Is it a hit and miss, hope you have some fire in there sort of thing when picking rough, or is there a tell tale sign that tells you it's a good piece?

Nate,
I have several grades of rough. Some are windowed already and some are not. When I am grading rough that still has the chalcedony cap I look for thick dark brown layers and what I call ribs. Sometimes you will see star burst looking formations on the sides of the rough, that usually is a good sign. very strong light and water helps a lot also. But even your best estimates sometimes yield less that desirable rough.

Thanks Christopher for showing your fire agates. It must be exciting to grind down to expose those flashes of fire hidden inside. I was wondering if you could recommend a place to get a couple nice pieces of rough to try. I've read that it hard to buy good rough like you have online.

Beautiful work on trying rough! I'd love to see much more of your work as I love fire agate and have been too shy to give cabbing it a try! Susan

Thanks for the info on checking rough Christopher. I have a piece from Woody, and now I know better how to check it over.

Susan, I would be happy to post more of my work. I just have to remember to take pictures of the rough. Sometimes I just get to ansy to cut a piece that I forget to take the before pictures. I get impatient to see what I am going to find and to see the stone "born" Spokanetim, I have several grades of rough. Low end by the pound to high end Royals by the piece. E-mail me and let me know what you are looking for and I am sure we can work something out.

You sure do put a lot of work into these and all the extra steps really show! Every time I look back at these threads, I am still amazed at the bubbly fire you see! Fran
