Ok im back with more questions I have had good luck on here so for with questions so here is another..... What is best to use in a rotary tumbler? I am very new at the tumbling part here, and I need to know which is better Graded or Ungated grits. I have 80,220,600 & then polish.. Someone let me know if I am doing good.  |

Graded are screened to a particular particle size. 80 means everything is 80 grit. The ungraded are a broader range. 60/90 (also called "80 ungraded") is a mixture of from 60 through 90 grit so average of 80. Since grit breaks down in a tumbler pretty quickly most people use the less expensive ungraded grits. Some flat lappers insist graded grit makes a difference but I really doubt it would in a tumbler.

So what your saying is it ok to use the graded just cost more. So next time I order I should get the ungraded. I know most of what I see people using on here is the ungraded

Yep, only difference in how they work in the tumbler is price. Graded is usually more expensive....Mel

Ungraded has always been good for me. Never have used graded and don't think I'll ever need to. Go with ungraded.

Well here is the thing Condor... I already have about 50 ponds of each of the graded..80 grit 220 grit& 600 grit but once I sell out of these I will go with ungraded... thanx

Greetings Ladies & Gents, while it is true that ungraded grits are cheaper within North America, it is also true that fixed graded grits are cheaper within the U.K & Europe! Ungraded grits are generally not available or at an increased cost, so check the prices of both before you buy! Mark: If you already have around 50 lbs of each 80, 220 & 600 Fixed grits why don't you use them as by the time you sell & re-buy replacements & postage you may have spent the excess you originally paid. Also the way i look at grits, 600 grade will last about 7.5 times (equivalent of 375 lbs) that of 50 lbs of 80 grade & the 220 will last about 2.75 times (equivalent of 137.5 lbs) that of 50 lbs of Fixed 80 grade with similar numbers for ungraded grits. -- I hail from (The Barony of Seabegs) Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, U.K, where aliens sometimes come for a visit & about 4 miles west from this monstrosity!
