Julie, those grooves look pretty good, as far as I'm concerned - if the wire fits and lies in the groove so that it is even with the surface of the cab, then it's about right, I think. To me, there are 2 difficulties with grooving: 1 is to get the groove in the center of the girdle all the way around (which depends on having ground the cab with a "correct" girdle to start with) and 2 is to get the groove a uniform depth. I have all kinds of troubles with both of those. Looks like you pretty much got it figured out, though. Tom

Thanks Tom!!!!
The first piece pictures really do not show the extent of the crumbling on one side.
What I think I will do is try to smooth it out using one of the other bits for smoothing then try to regular wrap.
I really don't think that I will be able to groove it again as it is too soft in some spots. I really do not want to make any further attempt as it really is a pretty cab and I do not want to completely destroy it.
As always

Julie, the Chrysocolla was a success just because you got the groove done with the cab intact. A little birdie once told me that you can use some clear nail polish in the groove before you do the wire part and let it dry. It will make the groove look better when the wire is in it. The other beautiful cab looks perfect. Good work Sweetie. Jo

Yea, grooving can be tricky, especially on small, thin stones. Jo, that is a great idea !! I have wondered about how I might be able to make the groove look better. I will have to try that with the clear polish!

Mike, thanks but I can't take credit, it was Saskrock who told me that little trick. Where is Scott anyways, haven't seen him around, hope he's all healed up from his surgery. Jo

Yup, I'm all healed up. Those grooves look good to me. The nail polish trick works pretty good if your groove is a bit wide for the wire, I did several of them back when I was using a saw blade instead of a grooving bit. Not sure how long it will stand up for, but my wife has ones about 1.5 years old that still look fine.
