i just bought an 18' for $800. I would start high so it leaves you room to wheel and deal.

Looks like a good one, built along the lines of the Highland Park saws, but H.P. vices were cast iron. Price does sound a bit high for an old saw that you may not be able to buy repair parts for. A year ago I bought a brand new 16" Covington for just over $2,000.00.

18" for 1500 used is high in my opinion. Granted, I'm a rookie at this, but I just got a used but great condition covington 14" with good blade for $600... so I think if they won't go lower than that, you might want to pass. I've been buying a lot of lapidary equipment lately trying to outfit the garage for my new obsession, and I've never had to feel like I overpaid for something... used saws come and go on the market, and with a little patience, one WILL come along at a price you can feel good about!

Tony has replacement vise jaws if needed, but, his are made from steel and not the breakable cast iron type !
