Got a buddy from Rapid City going out tomorrow to scout around. Too muddy right now for any serious hunting. Been stuck in that gumbo mud once. Don't want to do it again. lol Don

We will be out there the first week of August. We've had our reservations for 2 months. Plus we have an 8000w generator, so it can run that rv whereever we go LOL. Another nice thing is that truck will have brand new tires for the trip. I wasn't sure on the river, figured we'd grab one scuba tank if it was partially clear. I've had to dive waters where you can't see your hand in front of your face and it isn't fun at all. We very much plan on hitting the grasslands and some other areas as well.

Gonna be hot in August, but at least it should be dry. If you're gonna be in the grasslands, better be wearing snake gaiters. That's rattle snake country out there. Doesn't hurt to wear a sidearm loaded with snake shot either. A few of those big old kitty cats, (mountain lions) have been known to prowl the grasslands too. Not trying to scare you. Just want you to be safe. If you want, I can put you in touch with an old retired guy who takes folks out to the good hunting places. He only asks that you bring him a piece of nice material from your home state, large enough to turn a 3" sphere out of. He's trying to build a collection of spheres from all of the states. Don

I'm a wee bit jealous. I have a house in Ekalaka,Mt about 100 miles from Belle but untill I quit farming in Colorado I'm only up there in the winter.

Don, I already have snake boots, wear them when we are out here in the rocks because of copperheads, an occasional rattlesnake. Mountain lions don't bother me in the slightest. We have 3 big cats in our area right now, they are escapees from a wild game ranch from about 10 years ago. I don't know if its the originals or the young. My horse normally lets me know when they are around. We are pretty much armed when we are out. The outdoors just has never scared us much. I used to work with bears and cougars for animal parks, they were of course "tame", but did learn a lot about the animals themselves. I'm not saying I want to meet a cat out in the woods, watching one would be cool, but would very much prefer staying out of their way.
db - you just let me know where that house is at and I'll go check it out for you in the springs summers and falls! What kind of farming in Colorado? I lived in Colo for 2 years, loved and miss it a lot.

A friend went out to Fairburn yesterday to scout around. He says the place was a mud hole. Sure hope it dries out in the next week. Don

Not much to be found on the eastern side of the state. A few fossils and if you're lucky maybe a laker agate or two. What part of the state are you going to be in ? I live in the north east corner. About a 7 hour drive away from the good rockin areas. Don

We will be around Sturgis on Monday. Would love to meet some folks as we are mostly there for rock hunting. I've tried messaging a few people from up in that area but no one is answering. Thanks for all the help. Going to print it out. Does anyone know if Shawn has a store front for the rock shed. I haven't heard back from him either. I'm getting a complex. I would love to meet him!

Just sent a PM. I should add that you picked the wrong time of year for rockhounding in S.D. It's supposed to be in the 90's all next week, and possible strong storms. If you plan on hunting for Fairburn agates, head over to Railroad Buttes, or the town of Fairburn. Head east out of Fairburn, and watch for a campground about 15 miles out. The agate beds are around the hills to the north of the campgrounds. Be warned though, the grass is high, and that's rattle snake country. If it starts to threaten rain while you're out, get out quick. The gumbo mud out there eats 4WD trucks for lunch. Be safe, and good luck. Don

I've been reading about the gumbo. We are going to bring some rope and stuff as a precaution. Ed likes to "try things", so I've been reading and re reading the gumbo warnings to him.
We have been watching the weather non stop there. Your 90s is a 100 times better than our 90 weather. When I lived in Colorado.....90s was great compared to a Missouri 98. Our weather has sucked. Now I will be bummed if it rains a lot, I don't mind getting wet though, but would prefer to not be stuck!

From the campground east of Fairburn, you can drive across the creek, and right up to the agate beds. But if you see heavy clouds, it would be best to park at the campground and hike in. Better to end up with muddy boots, than have to wait for the mud to dry out, so you can drive back out. Don

Figured I'd post with some pics. I still don't have a bunch of good pics of the material I brought back with me, but will. South Dakota is a great state. We had a lot of fun. There were lots of wrecks on the interstate, never heard the outcomes though, we were stuck on the interestate for 3 different accidents one 2 different days. I've got lots of scenery photos and the buttes where we hunted on my facebook. www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=198687&id=578914510&l=9d26910870 From what I understand, you don't have to have a facebook account to check them. Just a small one I already cut a slab off of. Have no idea if this one could be a fairburn or not. One shop we went into had one very very similar to this one. I just thought this one was pretty nice considering it was straight brown on the outside. Pet Woods......one of my faves What is this??? What is this one? I just thought it was so different than anything else I found out there. This one is from Railroad Buttes This is the very first rock I found at Railroad Buttes. Its really smooth, I just love it! I think I'm going to cut one end off, polish the end and leave it as is. When I first saw it, thought maybe pet wood, but it's really smooth, so don't think it is. Anyways, hope it was ok to post the pics here. There was lots of interest in the SD thread. When I get pics of the bigger stuff, will post elsewhere. Thanks to some terrific folks on here for helping me out on where to hunt! I had a ball and can't wait to go back this fall! Sandy

Hi Sandy,
Cool horned toad and mammatus clouds. Your photos remind me of my trip out there a couple of years ago. I hope it was dry so that you didn't get mired in the gumbo!
Unfortunately, several people died on the interstate going to the rally this year, so it's no wonder you were stuck in traffic. The news I read indicated they were all older adults (50s and 60s).
Your maybe Fairburn looks like a Prairie Agate to me, but I'm not an expert. The reason I say that is that the banding on Fairburns tends to be very sharply defined, whereas it's not as defined on Prairie Agates. The colors are also typical of Prairie Agates. It's pretty, regardless, as is the one that was brown on the outside.
Chuck

That's a prairie agate. Fairburns would be evenly spaced bands, and wouldn't vary in width. The next to last pic looks like graphic granite, and the last pic could be serpentine. Did you pick up any dino bone at the buttes ? It tends to be in small pieces, and white on the surface. There's tons of it out there. Don

I was out at Railroad Buttes in late June. Got there 2 days after a heavy storm. It was still too muddy to drive beyond the parking area, so we had to walk in. You sure don't want to get stuck in that gumbo. Don
