Can some of the American Rock hounds please tell a dumb Scotsman what " lakers" are. I have seen them mentioned a lot on the forum, but i am not to sure what they are or what the equivalent is in the UK. Another name that i am not clear on is a "Chert". What makes one rock a Chert and another an Agate? I know Agates have Chert in them but what makes them not an Agate. Is it because there are no banding visible?? Oh GOOD LUCK USA tomorrow in the Football World Cup in South Africa. USA play against USA, as a SCOT I will be supporting you against England. Dermot.

Lakers are Lake Superior Agates. I like the Scottish agates myself. Spent 3 years in Dunoon, Scotland with the U.S. Navy, and never found a single agate. Don

Since Don got the "lakers" I'll try chert. Agates by definition are supposed to have random, non-repeating patterns (unlike onyx). Chert is a solid colored agate. Chert is sometimes used in a not favorable manner like "it's just chert". If you wanted solid cored agate it is called agate like I found some nice black agate as opposed to there was supposed to be banded agate but all I found was chert. No more confusing than most names rock hounds use and misuse.

Thanks for the explanation guy's. I have been looking to get some Lakers to tumble. Shawn at Rockshed is sold out and i can't find any others for sale. One day i will go to Lake Superior and look for them myself. Don I live not that far from Dunoon. I have found some good looking Agates all within 5 miles from my house. Turnberry, Maidens & Dunure. In my lack of knowledge i feel that i have waisted a few good Agates, with giving them the hammer treatment. Dermot.

In my off duty time I spent many happy hours hiking in the Scottish Highlands. Beautiful country. I'd love to have the chance to get back there and explore more without any time limits. A company here in the states that will ship Lake Superior agates overseas is Kingsley North, Inc. You can order their catalog at www.kingsleynorth.com I order many of my supplies from them, and I can vouch for their honesty and speedy service. Don

Dermot,
Give me a PM. I live at the Western tip of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota. I hound "Lakers" and their interesting side kicks every week. I'm pretty sure we can work something out.
