This one is Myrickite from the McLaughlin mine in Napa, California. It consists of cinnabar silicified by opal and chalcedony. It is1-1/2" tall. Bob

Geoff, I'm not sure if there are any sources for this material. I haven't heard of any coming out of the mine for many years. I would suppose that it has been closed. Most mercury mines are closed now because of environmental reasons. Bob

Like I have said before, one day, I am going to see a display by Bobby..........I will likely have a sensory overlaod, but it will be worth it. BTW,most Myrickite is found on the muck dumps, when the mines were recovering mercury they usually culled out the myrickite because of the low to nil yield of mercury from it. This means finding a closed cinnabar mine, and digging on the tailings dump. Northern California had several cinnabar mines so you might get lucky. Woody

That cab is breathtaking and I love all the info about the material that your threads seem to generate.
I have a question about hounding cinnabar. Do you need to wear a mask while hounding and handling it.
Looking at your cabs is always a source of inspiration.

Fran, If I had my breathing protection I couldn't lick it to check on the polish....sheesh. Actually, I only wear it when I'm sanding dry (which I didn't do on this one). I run a significant amount of water during my grinding and sanding operations so I'm not concerned about any noxious, toxic, dibilitating or hazardous stuff during my cabbing activities. Bob
