OK, just in case any of you ever doubted I'm a bit strange.... MY wife bought me an early b'day present the other day. I've been wanting a bug light to attract insects to our house so I could catch and photograph them. The science catalog types are pretty expensive so my wife bought me a bug zapper and I disconnected the "zap" part so it attracts bugs but does not kill them. Here are a couple of pics of some of my first visitors. I'm sorry but I took these with my cheap camera so they're not as nice as with the Canon. Thanks for lookin.....Mel A long Horned beetle known only by it's generic name: Rock hounds should recognize these next two types as they're scarabs and often done as gem carvings. Spotted Pelidnota: And finally the Ox Beetle. This big walnut sized scarab has big horns like a triceratops when it's a male and is so strong that when you hold it in your hand it can almost pry your fingers apart and escape. Thorny little bugger too.

The first one looks alot like the spruce beetle like the ones in Canada, saw many in Manitoba. I've been told that they can take a chunk out of ya.

Randy: That beetle is from a huge group with over 400 species just in Texas and some of the big ones do have a formidable set of mouth parts.....Mel

Mel, you get some great bug pictures and now you are luring them in when I on the other hand, am trying to get rid of the massive amount of bugs around here! Your pictures really do look cool but I would rather not see them in person. I have enough problems with ants, deer ticks, and some weird red and black bugs that I have forgotten the name of, that pile up and love to sun bathe. I think they eat maple trees and we are doing a lot of soap washes on the trees to try and keep them safe. Keep the pictures coming Mel and happy early birthday! Fran

Fran, Yep those can be troublesome. They're known as the Box Elder or Maple Bug and occur in hoards some years....Mel
