Lots of agate in eastern Montana near the Yellowstone river. I'm sure others could give more specifics as I haven't been down that way. What part of Montana are you going to be in?

Take exit 93 Eastbound, or exit 53 Westbound on the west side of Forsyth and take Hwy 12 north. Look for the Agate signs. There is a couple with a farm and horse troughs full of agate for $2/lb. Harmon's is supposed to be an excellent rock shop for Montana agate: www.harmons.net/They're north of Glendive, MT. I went hounding on a private ranch set up through my rock club, so I can't give you an exact location. You can look in any of the road cuts around Glendive or the Yellowstone River. The gravel is large and frequently has agate and petrified wood. If you ask around Glendive, I'm sure you'll find somebody willing to let you hound or sell you agate. Have a good trip! Chuck

I have a trucker / rockhound friend that lives in Billings. He has good luck finding agates in the gravel bars just south of Billings, if the river is low enough to reach the gravel. Don

Happy hunting, hope you get a lot of agates and have a safe trip. Please post some pictures and details (we always like to see pictures and knowing where to find the good rocks is definitely good).
