Christopher I always enjoying going along with you on your trips almost as much as I love seeing what you will create out of these stones. I have never been farther west than Texas and I love seeing this land. Thank you:) Watch out for snakes:) S

You were 31 miles from me. Next time you plan a trip that way give me a call. We camp with friends at Lavic and collect all around that area. There are many nice locations within 10-15 miles of there and many different types of rock. The red with white or blue stringers is classic Lavic. Across the freeway at the South Cadys is tons of tricolor "rainbow jasper"and lots of interesting agates. And on and on.

Funny that you started this thread. Going through buckets of rocks in my shed, I found 2 full of Lavic material that I'd forgotten about. Did the military folks south of Lavic siding put on a show for you ? Last time I was there, the fly boys were tearing up the desert floor with rockets, bombs and 20 MM cannon. Scared the wife half to death, as we were only about 1 - 1/2 miles from the action. Being an old Nam vet, I was loving it. Don

Great trip report! I really miss the trips out to Lavic and the south Cadys. You just never know what you'll find while hounding that area. I was just going through my Lavic area bin the other day and as always, it seems there's just no end to the wild and wonderful varieties of colorful jasper agate from that region.....Mel

Next time you're out that way, go west of Amboy about 5 miles to the Kel/Baker road. Go up Kel / Baker about 1-1/2 miles, and you'll see an old mine head frame. This is the old Black Jack silver mine. In the tailings you'll find good cabbing grade Dumortierite. You may even find small plates of Dumortierite crystals ( rare stuff ). Don

I wouldn't go into the mine itself. It's much too unstable. But digging through the tailings you can find some nice material, and possibly some mining relics. I found a couple of worn out chisels and a small broken pulley which I use as a display stand for a nice piece of Dumortierite. Don
