Last week we took the kids to Herkimer, NY to look for crystals, and to our surprise the kids had a blast. It was hot and humid and then pouring down rain, so we never did get any pics of the mine, but let me tell you hunting those crystals is hard work. It involves slinging a large sledgehammer and hoping to find some in the dolomite, or sifting through piles of mud in hopes of finding them, which is what I did with the kids. The kids were better hunters, I think their eye sight is a little better But we want to go back, and I think the kids are up for another trip, they were defiantly in search of the biggest and best "diamonds". We liked the Ace of Diamonds Mine better than the Campground that was featured on the Gem Hunter show. But not one for roughing it, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the KOA campground was there.
Our little cabin, no hot water for showers, but we had a kitchen and a bed and a bathroom, yeah!
Bobby and Autumn enjoyed the porch swing
Nothing like a campfire with smores when it is 90 degrees outside, LOL
Our scraps and broken pieces
The best ones me and Bobby found
A perfect crystal is totally clear and double terminated with 18 faceted sides, most have black inclusions with is anthraxolite. or something, organic plant matter basically. Some are a pale yellow or darker smokey quartz color.
All our hard work didn't even fill a 2" vial, LOL
The best crystal that Bobby found we turned into a necklace for him the store appraised it at $50.00. It is slightly over 1" he wasn't going to let Mom have it, LOL.
I would recommend this place if you have kids or are up for some hard work, when you find one you get so excited, but it is an overwhelming task!
