Port Hood, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia Petrified Wood – Our petrified wood is not highly agatized or silica replaced like that found in the mid-west USA. It was formed in the late Carboniferous period about 300 million years ago. Its occurrences are closely associated with coal deposits and to some degree; much of the petrified wood has a “coal-like” appearance. Typically, only the lighter pieces show traces of growth rings. Many of the darker pieces exhibit iron staining. Darryl.

After you slab it, give it a soak in household bleach. The bleach will lighten it, and bring out the grain. Woody
