Last week my wife and I went to the Madras Pow Wow. On the way back south we went down the Oregon and Northern California coast. On a segment of the trip in Northern California you encounter a lot of elk crossing signs. Usually when you see them they are at a distance and as you try to get closer they slowly walk away from you. Here alongside the road was a herd that seemed oblivious to people. This one posed for a few seconds and went back to munching the tall grass. There were quite a few in the herd. I believe they are protected from any hunting in the area so they seem to be becoming tamer as time goes on. Bob

They are beautiful animals, for sure.
But they can be quite dangerous, and can easily kill a human. I found this out the hard way while we lived in Longmont, Colorado. We would go up to Estes Park and into the national park at least twice a month. and once we found a small herd like that, close to the road. I got out to take pictures, and while I was busy focusing, the big bull decided he didn't like me. I just barely made it to the car in time to avoid his 5-foot spread. Up close, he was one hell of a lot bigger than I thought!
But they are gorgeous creatures, aren't they?

They are beautiful animals and like Tom says, they can be dangerous. Unfortunately them being tame isn't good for them although it makes for some nice close-up pictures.

They sure look happy and content just being out there eating. As long as they don't run in the road, it is OK. Fran

Looks like the deer around parts of PA. Some places you can even hand feed the "wild" deer. I've never seen an elk before but our herd here in PA is about 500 but they are all located in two remote areas in the center of the state. Great pics.

Got to see some Elk in CO one time, but not close enough for pics. Cool that you got to get so close.
