... Because Adrian is a fully qualified engineer he should be able to come up with some design for a tumbling machine I can add to my bike so that I can tumble stones while enjoying/killing myself It'll need gearing so that if I'm going too slow the gears make it tumble at the right speed and if I'm going too fast it reduces the tumbling speed. Something that can be connected to the bike gearing mechanism. Don't want anything to drag behind. Dragging causes friction and friction causes my legs to ache faster. LOL Over to you Adrian. ;D

Cool idea John, but anyway , even if no friction at all would occur in the gear (which is impossible), that tumbler would still consume some of your precious energy by the internal friction between the stones, grit, rubber barrel. The problem is not very complicated, excepting the speed regulator you require, which is a challenge. Bearing in mind the slow rotation speed required for the tumbler barrel, I think one option would be to attach it directly to the pedals' shaft, which has the lowest rotation speed. But this way the rotation speed would vary; besides, the barrel would not spin while you are descending a slope and rest your feet, and that is exactly when it would be easier to function. As you see, your barrel is not spinning yet but my mind is already Adrian

How about one of those bicycle generators ? The type used for lights on bikes, and a low voltage motor to turn a tumbler. Granted it would have to be a very small tumbler. Just my 2 cents worth. Don

Bike generator won't work, not enough current,. But you might be on the right track...friction drive from the rear wheel maybe. You'll be raising the CG of your bike quite a lot, you might want to rig a gallon jug half full of water & rock to see if you can stand the change in momentum. (Do you really plan on biking for a week at a time 24/7 ? ) I'll keep thinkin' 'bout it . Dr Joe

Look at the pic of John's rig. It's a shame he couldn't somehow roll a long barrel on top of the wheels of his bike trailer.

What about a vibe tumbler? Like adding a dented wheel to one of the trailer's wheels and attach the barrel to a rod which would vibrate each time when a dent of that wheel overpasses it? This way you won't be related to a speciffic frequency.
Adrian
PS. That would make a lot of noise, though. It would be a dog magnet ;D

How about mounting rotory tumbler barrels to the outside of each trailer wheel. Or would they stick out to far for you. Mike
