Hi,
My son Chris Perez and I are going to Flint Ridge area of Ohio this Saturday. Can't wait to see the colorful flint in the area. We will check out the park but our plan is to obtain some flint for tumbling. It's about a two hour ride from here but there really are no gemstones anywhere in this area. Wish us luck at finding some.
Regards, Tanya

No gem stones maybe, but you can make some great cabs from the Flint Ridge material.

Many thanks! That cab is beautiful. We don't either have the equipment for cabbing but I love to tumble. We will be seeking small stones for tumbling so Chris can wrap them. I received some info on this site about where to go to get some so we are going to try it out. It seems in Ohio we have to pay for most any tumbling stones so we have prepared ourselves for a great day out with a sledge hammer and my rock pic hammer and our cameras. Can't wait to get there. Have to admit I am jealous of those who live in an area where you can just go to an old road bead and pick up agates and jasper among others. Tanya

if your paying by the bucket full and find the larger pieces dont break them up. Its kinda hard to find bigger pieces of flint ridge and the knappers go nuts over this stuff. I have some out back that I picked up free from a knap-in and its great for what I need it for. If you cook it you can get some awesome colors out of it

most use a kiln or you can use a turkey roaster with the pan out and fill with sand etc, I use sand and charcoal

I don't have a Kiln available but by turkey roaster are you talking about the electric roaster? I do have that. Do you just put sand in it with the flint in the sand and plug it up? If so, how long? I would love to be able to do this but I don't want to do it wrong. Many thanks! Tanya

You probably can't cook Flint Ridge in a turkey roaster...they only go up to around 500 degrees. It generally takes 550-650 degrees to do it justice. Won't hurt to try it.
Put a 1 inch layer of dry sand in the bottom, set a layer of rock on it..try not to have pieces over a couple inches thick. Cover with more sand and another layer of rock...if you have room, do it again. Turn the roaster on low - no more than 200 degrees and let sit for 12 hours - this will pretty much dry the rocks out, then up the temp 25 degrees an hour until you max out the roaster. Let it sit for a couple hours at max temp then turn off...don't open the roaster until cooled off. Be patient.
Different rocks take different times and temps - the main reason to cook certain rocks is to improve knappability..any color change is a bonus.

How can you tell if your flint was cooked? I bought some flint ridge and didn't think to ask if it was cooked or not...

Bring it to Flint Ridge on Labor Day weekend and someone will tell you. It's hard to give knapping lessons on message boards I'll be there.

Well, we're off to flint ridge tomorrow for a little rock hunting and sightseeing.... looks like it might be a hot day again, hopefully no rain though ( gotta love Ohio weather.... ). Don't worry, I'll take pictures ( I like taking pictures.... that way I never end up in any , ha!!! ).... Anyone have any last minute tips for us ;D? Chris
