I have been pondering an idea for a few weeks now and I just wanted to see what other people thought about it. I kinda would like to make an on-line map that people can add local rock collecting locations to. Of course, the good locations are going to remain secret, but it would be nice for people who are traveling and want clear directions to a local spot or people who are completely new and want to collect some of their first rocks. I know that if I screw arrond with google maps enough I could set something up because I have seen other community maps that operate on the same principle, but I just wanted to gauge interest and get ideas first.

Sounds like a fun project. If you get it up and running, I can certainly add some favorite locations. Some more difficult to get to than others. Don

Just wondering if this idea has taken off? And if so, a URL would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

No, joemojave turned out to be a scam artist that caused some turmoil here some time ago.

Sort of like petrified wood farm is trying to do, eh? Russ Could you kindly explain yourself Russ? I'd like to know just what I'm doing that disturbs you so. I wasn't into Rockhounding, nor was I a member of this site (which for the most part, is most wonderful) 5 years ago. I am so very sorry that I am not as good as yourself, I'm just trying to gather (valid / updated) information for my own personal usage (which may also assist others new members to this site as well). I am not attempting to stir the pot. Michael

No, joemojave turned out to be a scam artist that caused some turmoil here some time ago. But ShotGunner, don't you think the idea is worth the effort? It is quite simple enough to gather POI's and create a GPX, XML, CVS, etc. file with the amount of Rockhounders out there who use a GPS while in the field. I think the idea is fantastic, and something I plan on looking into as I get more involved with this hobby / business. (Even if the User was scam artist, he did have a valid idea). Michael

Michael Of course, I think it's a great idea. I was simply answering your question. Personally I'd like to see it as a kml file. If you do it as a spreadsheet, I can convert it to kml.

I've started using a private Google map to mark locations that I have visited (or want to visit) across the country. For me the plus side to using a google map is my google phone can give turn by turn directions while on the road. Additionally each 'pinned' location has the ability to add an additional box of information for each site. I have found this to be an invaluable resource while driving cross country. The Google maps afford the option of inviting viewers and/or editors to your maps. But I am not sure how practical this would be for a group this size.

Actually I use it for work to find clients and prospects. It works so well I opted to pay $5 a month for the google "maps engine" that allows one to upload an excel spreadsheet and view the locations on your phone using google maps or earth. Not 100% sure about the latter, but maps does have an earth overlay.

I see the general consensus here. No one wants to loose their favorite picking places by sharing secret locals to thousands of others.
OK, that is human, I guess. And appreciate it as well.
I still think the idea is a great one. I wonder just how many other formats and other Apps / programs others use to log their special sites. Some real good ideas are found here!
P.S. Thanks Russ.
