Parts of this resemble amazonite, parts resemble plain old colorless agate, but the patterns are strange. Any ideas out there? Thanks, Tom

alot will depend on where it originated...but first guess would be a varisite (sp) of some kind...is it sorta soft?

Yessir, it is soft. In fact, I just today took my pocket knife and scraped an entire edge off of one corner of a small piece of it. I'm guessing no more than MOH's 3.5, 4 at the most. But it feels solid, and looks like it ought to shine up nicely. I'll have to wait and see on that part.
I did Google "variscite" and looked through the resulting images. It does look like a few of those pics, but what I have seems to be a lot more "pure" looking - like the green and white but no imbedded matrix like most of those pictures.
Anyway, it is pretty stuff!

Any idea where this material came from ? I'm working on an idea. I received a large chunk of material that looks very much like what you have, but is around 6 Moh's. Don

Ok, the material I'm thinking of is called Listwanite. It's a type of alteration zone material associated with the formation of nephrite jade. A friend has a claim in the Washington mountains, and sent me a chunk to see if it will cab. Oh, by the way, don't bother googling Listwanite. even the folks at Mindat were stumped by this one. In all of his research, my friend only found it mentioned 3 times. Don

It looks a lot like "Tri-Color" marble from Stoddard Wells area in CA. It is a brecciated marble so very soft.
