Howdy folks, Man I can't believe it. I had erased some pics Lowell needed for the index and spent the entire afternoon retaking the pics only to find my camera had somehow screwed up and the disk was freaking empty. Took these few to retest and they did fine. Don't know what the heck is going on with the dang camera but anyway, here are a few more pics....Mel Another cosmos jasper variant from the neighbors place; Two more from the place the guy built on top my rock hunting site: Put his wellhouse on top of this one: And finally a slab off a piece I dug way out in the boonies. I somehow got to Texas with almost none of this so Lowell may have some boulders he got from my rockpile. This stuff really looks a lot like Ocean Jasper

That last one does look like underdeveloped ocean jasper. Really cool.

Lowell, Yup, I drove my truck back and forth to Texas four times. Mainly other collectibles the first trip with only a few jasper boulders but the other trips i was down on my overload springs with rocks. Moved maybe three or four thousand pounds myself and then had another seventy or so flat rate cartons of rocks and slabs plus all my milk crates full, I had the moving company move for me. I would have had them move even more had I know the per pound price got a lot cheaper as the load got heavier. I was fun seeing the movers take the rock boxes down the loading ramp though. Them rocks got them going pretty fast down hill and there was some pretty colorful language too. *L* Looks like you got almost as much Hornitos jasper as I moved.....Mel

Mel, a question - does the cosmos always have red coloration, or could it also be just grayish-whitish? I'm wondering if I might have some cosmos in disguise.

Tom: Where the Cosmos Jasper veins were there were intergrades galore with lots grading into the Hornitos brecciated Jasper. Most all was in shades of red, pink or maroon on a white to pink base but sometimes the base color was gray. Some of the markings were actual tiny multiringed orbs while others under a scope appear more like little snowflakes or puff balls. Far as I know, I'm the only one that mined the Cosmos Jasper and now there is a house right on top about half the site. I've swapped and traded some so I suppose you might have come across some somewhere.
Philosopher: There are still many Hornitos Jasper sites mostly totally overgrown by deep manzanita and other brush. I prospected at least a dozen outcrops and pits not including one on our own ranch. We had a hillside full of the Primrose Poppy jasper nodules still in situ but a be-atch to remove from the boulders. Several adjacent private ranches also have deposits as well as several old patented claims and some BLM sites. Best access was through a pvt ranch where I once had permission but which has since been sold and closed off. The area is a maze of dangerous old mine roads and full of rattlers and Mountain Lions. My hounding buddy and I both having had local homes spent 15 yeas finding the good areas but I really don't feel comfortable providing sites to commercial collectors as my buddy still collects the area....Mel

Philosopher: Not really. I had to limit what I moved back to Texas with me and of course have access to no more. Most is in large boulders which my wife has since claimed for her garden and the rest I'm keeping for cutting stock, tumbling and maybe future trades.....Mel
