Hi Everyone, I've noticed a lot of you Tumble Cab's & small Slab's, Do these need to be thicker than the ones you would use for normal Cab's? I had thought of cutting some 3/8" or maybe a little thicker, Or will 1/4 inch thick be OK? Will a Rotary Tumbler be OK? Or would it be better to use a Vibe Tumbler for Cab's & Slab's? Thanks Mike PS: I hate to ask all these dumb question's, But all this is new to me, Maybe I'm tying to get ahead of myself! ( I want to do it all now...LOL)

Straight to the vibe if you have preform cabs and slabs.

1/4 inch should be ok for slabs, if you go straight into a vibe. Chances are that if your slabs have cracks in them, they'll break at the cracks, even in a vibe. This can lead to some interesting shapes for wire wrapping. Don

You know I finish most my cabs in the vibe and vibes are pretty gentle as long as your filler with the cabs is fairly small stuff. When I do cabs in my UV-10, I actually prefer thinner cabs as the tumbler seldom breaks them if they're solid stuff in the first place. I recently even did a couple of them 1/8 inch thick and they came out just fine. 3/16 to 1/4 work swell too but I stay away from thicker cabs than that because then, you have a heavy object bopping against the other cabs. Heavy thick cabs bopping together can spell more breakage along the edges in my experience. I usually try not to run huge numbers of cabs too. Prefer maybe forty to fifty in the UV-10 with the rest being tiny stones 1/4 inch or so for the filler. Main problem I encounter with vibe finishing cabs is undercutting. That dang vibe will seek out and undercut anything that is slightly softer than the rest of the stone. Moss agate or other included agate is especially prone to problems. Specimens that would do fine on the diamond wheels will sometimes pit or onionskin all to heck in the vibe...Mel

Thanks Guys, I tried some small slabs in a 6-lb tumbler, They just didn't turn out the way I wanted, So that's why I am thinking of getting a UV-10 Industrial! The problem is, No one seems to have one in stock, I hope it's still being produced. Thanks for the replies, Mike

Mike, thanks for asking the questions--I had some of the same ones, and now we both have answers.

The UV-10's are still listed in the Kingsley North catalog, page 13. Don

I tumble 1/4" slabs and preforms in my UV-10. I use 1/4" because I am drilling the pendant mounts. Thinner than that is a little beyoind my drilling skills.
