I picked this up this morning at a Flea market. Came home cleaned it up and added some bolts to hold down the motor which is 1725 rpm. I did a google searched but only find modern units on eBay. This was used I believe for optical lenses. I can't find the MFG. web site any help would be appreciated. The unit has a metal drum copper outer 6" by 1/2 " shaft is 1 1/16 inch Novamatic Why is there a groove in copper on drum and was polish added on to the smooth copper? I was wondering if I can get a belt cover or should I add a new drum. Was thinking of only using it for fine polish. Would you please add to this thread if you see any other information. It does have drain hole for internally on bottom of case. Thanks, Cliff Attachments:

Could the "copper" be a sintered rim with abrasive? Copper laps are used to polish on facet machines but at 1725 and diamond added would be thrown off. If there is an abrasive imbedded I'm guessing it was a glass working tool. The groove may be for edges. Search through glass related sites.

Thanks guy's for the information.
The wheel looks real good and the groove clean edge. They must have applied Diamond paste to the wheel.
I guess I will remove wheel and install a six inch wheel for other polishing needs.
Weird I work with glass lampworking and Cabochon's and this shows up Sunday.
Maybe I will try some paste to wheel to see if it cleans some of my beads and glass pendants, I just couldn't leave it sitting there at the Flea Market. The price was worth the learning. Thanks, Cliff

The machine was designed for the ophthalmic industry, it was used to chamfer the edge of a lens that would be inserted into an eyeglass frame. If my memory is holding the The groove is 2.5mm wide 120 degree included angle. The company went out of business in 2000. The wheel is similar to a sintered wheel. It was manufactured with either a 2.5 or 3mm layer of industrial diamonds mixed into a mixture of resin and powdered copper. It performed with superior results when compared to sintered products but that was with mineral glass and plastics. The superior adhesion of the resin as opposed to the non chemical bonds of sintered products extended the life span. I have no idea what granite or quartz will do with regards to wear. The most common mesh size of the diamonds was 600 (85%) but 200 - 1500 mesh were available. Look on the side of the wheel for a number, this is most likely the mesh. The bolt holding the wheel on is a reverse thread brass into aluminum, don't turn it the wrong way or it will break. If dull you need a dressing stick, this is a hard stone similar to a knife sharpening stone, it depends upon the mesh size of the wheel as to what mesh dressing stick you need, if this is a 600 mesh then 400 or fine stick is best

Thanks finally saw 600 on wheel with a light on it. Novamatic Systems 036-17 The groove is angled roughly 3 mm wide.
On the arbor is an arrow and also on the wheel. Appreciate the information. Cliff
