Hey all, Wow...its been slow lately! Guess I'll pose a question. So I was out hounding in central Montana in a place well known for its garnets. I was able to pick up about three pounds and am looking for advice on tumbling them. I've searched the forums and haven't located specific advice for these rocks, but my research has shown they can be tumbled. I'm thinking along the following lines - correct me or add to the list: - Tumble all garnets in a single batch to prevent problems
- Use a fair amount of plastic pellets to prevent shattering
- Fill with ceramics to make up volume/weight
- 60/90 will be minimal to prevent significant erosion of the small garnets, mostly just to get the matrix off and provide decent smoothing to the surfaces
- Steps 2 through 4 should be the same as always
- Planning on using CO for 2 weeks - will this work well?
I know that garnets are fairly hard and I read a tip somewhere that it may be better not to tumble them with other rocks. Any other tips that you can provide for working with garnets? As always - thanks for the tips!

Based on my experience, which consists of one time tumbling them, they vary in hardness but otherwise were no different your typical agate/jasper batch. I had no problem with shattering. I rarely use plastic, (and didn't for the garnets) but did use a lot of ceramic shapes to make up volume and cushion. I don't recall what I used for polish, but it was probably AO from the Rockshed.
Good luck, and please post photos!

I seem to recall a couple years ago someone here ran a batch of garnets in with a largish piece of Stone Canyon Jasper, and both came out of the process looking really spectacular, I'll have to dig around and see if I can find that old thread...
No luck with the search function, maybe someone else remembers who it was and can find the thread- then again maybe it's too old to be found...
But I seem to recall that the garnets served as "filler" so ceramic and plastic were not used at all- apart from that I think the recipe was pretty much the usual standard practice.
I would think Aluminum Oxide might work better for polish than cerium though...

A couple of years ago I would buy the pea sized almondine garnets from Bergs and throw a small handful in every tumble.Worked great, but cant find them now.Maybe someone knows where to get them.I dont see a problem tumbling them with other hard rocks.
