I want to do some work that requires a vertical spindle. I want to attach stones to it and work them like a lens. Any good ideas? I thought about using an old food processor, or something like that. How could I attach a chuck or rod with dop surface to the spindle?
Still in the thinking process...

Sounds like an interesting project. I hope you'll post pics of the machine as it's being built. Unless you have a food processor with variable speed, one being a very low mixing speed, it will probably spin much too fast. Blenders have variable speed, and may be better for this. The center shaft of a blender could probably be threaded, and a small chuck threaded right onto it. Another idea would be a motor from one of those bread maker machines. I have one that is rated 12 V, DC. Something like a model train transformer could be used to power it, and would be adjustable for speed over a fairly wide RPM range. The motor I have has a 1/4" shaft. Don

I have an old Craftsman variable-speed router mounted inverted under a router table - wouldn't be any problem at all to clamp a dop stick in the router chuck, and turn it at any speed you like, up to 20,000 rpm.
Just an idea .... but you really wouldn't want to get it wet, though!

I think the blender might be a good way to go, but man... it would be loud! I just want a spinning shaft to attach my stone to, and some way to protect from water. Still thinking...
Thanks for the ideas!

Would a drill press work? Some times you can find them for cheap.
