It's a great deal...for the seller.$9 FOR 12 ozs. You can buy 3 lbs or better at the rock shed for that price. I've seen these boxed grits, similar to this for sale at harbor freight for about 9 bucks, what a rip-off.

Yep, what Snuffy said ... also, these grit packages assume you'll do it in only 4 steps, and only 1 week for each step. If you read up in these forums, you'll find that you'll be spending more like 3-4 weeks in each step, with a cleanup and grit recharge every week, and you might also end up with 5 or 6 steps instead of just 4. So bear that in mind when you order your grits.
I buy all my grit from The Rock Shed. Shawn is a super dude.

I agree! When I joined this forum I only had a 1.5E Lortone and I purchased my grit from Ebay. No stores around me that sell and rocks or rock supplies. I saw www.therockshed.com on this web site and have been buying from them ever since. They also send a small baggie of candy with each order. I have also acquired a Lortone 33B and I have a Thumler's 15 lb'er on the way in the mail so I am now using a lot of grit. Please check them out. They also have parts and all kinds of supplies for your tumbler. They charge shipping by the flat rate box so if you get up to say 15 lbs it would only cost I think $10.70. Real good people to deal with. Welcome aboard, Tanya

I agree with the comments so far. I would also add that if you're looking to do this somewhat often, it would be beneficial to have a fair amount more of the course grit since you will use a lot more of this than anything else. Also, if you can afford it, it's much more cost effective to buy in bulk over the grit packs. I buy course in 25-50lb increments, 120/220 thru 1000 in 5lb increments and polish in 2-5lb increments. It's cheaper for the product that way and way cheaper for the shipping.

Thanks for all the tips and help. I have a 1 qt tumbler barrel, and just plan on playing with it off and on through the fall, and maybe the winter if it's not too noisy to do in the basement instead of the shed.
I actually decided to go with the Rock Shed after looking thrugh his site, but on a whim I looked up a local hobby shop and zipped off and e-mail adking if they carry any, and this is the list he gave me:
300 Combo Grit Pack Small (1) $10.77 INCLUDES: One 4 Ounce Pack (Coarse Grit) One 4 Ounce Pack (Fine Grit) One 2 Ounce Pack (Polish) One 2 Ounce Pack (Prepolish)
304 Combo Grit Pack Large (1) $26.33 INCLUDES: One 1 Pound Pack (Coarse Grit) One 1 Pound Pack (Fine Grit) One 1/2 Pound Pack (Polish) One 1/2 Pound Pack (Pre-polish)
310 Coarse Grit 1 lb $8.53
311 Fine Grit 1 lb $8.53
312 Pre-Polish 1/2 lb $8.55
313 Polish 1/2 lb $8.53
320 Plastic Tumbling Beads 1/2 lb $5.21
I thought that seemed pretty reasonable, esp since it is 20 minutes from my house, and literally right across the street from where my kids go to school and go to soccer practice 5 nights a week atm...SO NO SHIPPING!
I think I'll go with the large combo pack, and see where we are after that. (If the kids are still interested)

Well, sorry to beat a dead horse, but the Rock Shed charges $14.50 for the Large combo, but it also includes a full pound of pre-polish and of polish. If shipping is less than $10 you'd come out ahead with the Rock Shed. Of course, it's a little less convenient, but you do get some candy! Chuck

Thanks. It comes out about $2 more at the Rock Shed, (shipping was almost $13) and I'd get more of the two last ones, but I think I'll stick with the hobby shop, and give my local, small bussiness the $$, until, or if I decide to do much much more and need it in bulk. Gotta help keep him in business, in case I ever need him for something...lol

I like your decision to support your local hobby shop, with one exception. All polishes are not created equal. There is aluminum oxide that will hardly polish anything, and then there is aluminum oxide that will polish most everything! So if you have problems with polishing, you might want to purchase your polish elsewhere.

I would guess that it is good, but I've never used it. Perhaps someone else can comment who has.
