I have a problem that has frustrated me beyond words! Have tried everything I can think of, and I don't seem to be getting anywhere with it. The problem is with my diamond belts, particularly the 3000 and 8000 belts. They will, very randomly, put very large scratches on the cab I am working on. Seems to be especially bad on obsidian and other stones of similar hardness, and softer. The scratches will be bad enough that I have to go back to 400 grit belt to get them out, and start back up through all the stages. The instructions that come with the belts advise me to dress the belt before use. I do that with the dressing stick I bought. I have dressed them a few times now, but still have the problem. Last night, I had an idea. When dressing the belt, part of what happens is that the belt needs to get a little hot from the friction of the stick. I have always had the water on when I dress the belt. Maybe that is preventing the belt from getting hot like it needs to be. So, I used the dressing stick dry on the belts. This seems to help. Does this sound correct, that I should run the belt dry for the 5 seconds that I am supposed to dress the belt? By having the water on, maybe it isn't getting hot enough to break the vacuum bonds in the belt? These belts have quite a few hours on them. I am at my wits end now.
While I am at it, is really even possible to get a smooth, scratch free back on my cabs using 6 inch wheels? I have tried every thing I can think of, and I just can not get a good finish on the backs! It seems that the scratch pattern is good and even on the back after the 400 grit stage, then, starting with the 600 grit belt, the center is not getting sanded, only the outer edges. What could I be doing wrong? I just spent 4 hours tonight working on the backs, finally gave up and settled for a polished, very shiny, scratched back!! grrrrr!!
Any helpful info will be greatly welcomed and appreciated. If I have not provided enough info, please ask for more.
Thanks;
Mike
