Hi everyone, I am working on my 6 wheel arbor (as described in a previous post) and I keep running into the problem of my wheels (Diamond Belt Wheels from Kingsley North) not being perfectly snug on the shaft because of the bushings I am using. The wheels do not appear wobbly when they are spinning, but when you put a stone against them, there is too much vibration. The shaft is 5/8" and is supposed to be within 1/1000" according to the specs from the person I bought it from, so I don't think it is the shaft - I believe it is the bushings. I have a couple different types of bushings (and all 3 widths) and the red seem to be more snug than the orange, but they all are just not quite good enough. I believe that John mentioned that you should have to sort of "force" the wheels onto the shaft because it needs to be that snug. My wheels (with these bushings) have a very slight rock back and forth if I push on them when the shaft is not spinning. I put some tape on the outside of the bushings (just to make them a tad thicker) so that they would be tighter within the wheel) but they also seem to be not tight enough on the inside of the bushings where they touch the shaft. When I try tape there, it just seems to come off when I slide it onto the shaft. Looking for any and all suggestions on how to modify/rig my bushings to work, or more ideally, better bushings, even if they are more expensive. Thanks, Dave

Hmmm, my grinder has a nut on the end of the shaft that you use to tighten the wheels against the flanges and bushings between them...

:-)
so does mine, but if they are not on straight, then they will not tighten straight and will then wobble

"Diamond Belt Wheels" are Chinese. Very common to find the wheels not balanced. That causes vibrations and difficulty when trying to cab. And yes, they should fit snug on the shaft.

Sorry, I just read this again. If the shaft is "cold rolled shaft stock" I'd send the wheels back. Most Chinese wheels come with adapter bushings. Either the bushings/wheels are not right or the shaft isn't. If the shaft isn't cold rolled it might not be completely round so no good for a shaft.
