i found an old western auto 6 inch arbor can i use this to buid me a grinder it has no bearings it has bushings would thi work if you keep it oiled or will the water hurt bushings and what size motor and how rpms

I wouldn't worry about water hurting the bushings. It's the grit fron grinding and sanding that will do the bushings in. If you can devise a way to protect the bushings from grit, that arbor will work just fine. Many an old timer built his own lapidary equipment, using this sort of arbor. I have one from Montgomery Wards that has sealed bearings. As for the motor, a 1/4 HP would probably work for a 2 wheel setup. 1/3 HP would be better. Most motors are 1725 RPM's Get a motor pulley the same size as the arbor pulley. Build yourself some pans and hoods, add wheels and a water supply and you're in business. Don
