Howdy folks, Posting some of my tumbles got me to thinking about seeing if I can find a few more interesting rocks here on my hill so I went out for a quick photo hike this afternoon. Still very hot here so I was only out long enough to get a little fried. Anyway, I know some of you have seen similar shots from the ranch before but here are a few more. Thanks for looking.....Mel The reason why we usually wear helmets when we ride. Rockier than heck here and almost all flint of various sorts. Here's a nice nodule of blue flint. And another of the same: Huge block of Texas Turritella full of various lower cretaceous fossils: Huge nodule of flint, some kind of psuedomorph. Probably actually would be classified as a sedimentary agate: Actually, these things are more of a cluster of nodules or geodes: This one actually is a fortification agate type nodule: Another of the nodule conglomerates: Actual crystal lined geode about as big as my head: Nice banded red-brown flint nodule: Couple of pieces of stromatolite ( stoney algae pseudomorph) And finally a cool cactus but not so cool if you're riding a horse. These come in a couple of types one with larger thorns and are known locally as " horse cripplers" as they are buried in the soil except for the top and if your horse steps on one the thorns can work into the frog of the hoof and cripple your horse;

Oh, my aching back! As I continued along your photo tour, I was hauling some of those treasures back home. Nice selection for an afternoon walk.

That's neat - hiking around the hill country. I used to love it, back when I was a teenager, and the folks had a ranch. Looks like you have a pretty wide variety of flint to choose from on your place. Do you ever cab any of it? Oh, yeah, I do remember the horse cripllers - I recall that sometimes they can puncture through the bottom of a pair of Keds also! Thanks for taking us along, Mel. Tom

Thanks for the walk Mel. So how do you avoid those catus besides looking downward all the time? Can a horse sense them? Just wondering since it would seem that the catus would be plentiful in some areas.

sitnwrap: Actually, those cacti are not that common but we always watch the ground when riding anyway to avoid parking our horses on fire ant mounds which are not a whole lot of fun for the horse and can lead to some interesting thrills added to a ride. Plus we always inspect and clean the horses hooves when we ride too so you can watch for spines in the frogs....Mel

Thanks Mel. I love learning new stuff, especially anything about horses.

I'm with Toad. Any part of what you see there would be appreciated here. We drive 2 hours one way for Flint Stone Flint and that is about it in the area of Ohio I am in. I would be struggling to get my bucket of stones back to tumble based on what I saw there. The nodule of blue flint is beautiful and I love any kind of agates. Not any within probably a 10 hour drive of home. Thanks for sharing, Tanya

I love your posts Mel. I always learn so much! Mesquite thorns were some of what you had to watch out for in our area. I was always shocked at how large they could be and how much they hurt if they scratched you. I do not miss the fire ants at all!!! Fran
