I think when you're learning, it's probably a good idea to check the barrel 1-2 times over the first few rolls. This will give you an opportunity to observe the slurry and decide whether you should make adjustments in the future. The slurry should be a thin pancake batter like consistency.
After you've done this awhile, the "newness" wears off a bit and it becomes easier to not regularly check the barrels. I've learned to listen to them for the right sound and this usually indicates whether I have a problem or not. I usually just change out the course stages every 5-7 days and don't bother with checking them.

When I started I would check it a couple times a week. Now I don't. I started with a Lortone 1.5E, grew to a 33B Lortone and now added a, new to me, Thumler's Model B 15 lb'er. I just love the thrill I get when the tumbler is open at the end of a week. Hope you get the same thrill. It may take up to 3 or 4 weeks in the course before they are ready for the next step. But it is exciting opening that barrel. Welcome Aboard the RTH, Tanya
