I have been looking and looking and I sure can't find what kind that one is. The ones that have spots like that one on their under-wing don't have the same wing shape. Maybe one of the experts will let us know. I think it is a very pretty one though! Fran

Definitely a Sphingid ( Sphinx Moth). It's a large group and I'm not a real expert but I'd say maybe the One eyed Sphinx but I know of at least four species with those eye markings. They are close relatives of the hornworm that eats your tomato plants. I have sphinx moth guide somewhere so I'll try to look it up for you.....Mel
Yep, looked it up and it looks to be the Salicet Sphinx Moth, Smerinthus saliceti which feeds on Willow and poplar.

Mel, Thank you for the ID. I looked online at a photo index for quite a while but the names confused my completely and there were supposedly 11,000 varieties to look from. Bob

I was in the same boat Bob. I kept searching and searching. One conclusion I did come to. That one is really pretty compared to some I had seen! Some are just downright scary! Fran

That is a neat moth. It looks like his head is wrapped in a fur cap.
