Howdy folks, Got called out for a snake rescue today so since I know a few of you like snakes, I had my wife hold it and I took a couple of pics before I go out and relocate it to a safer location. It's amazing the folks who called me didn't kill this feller as he was trying as hard as he could to look poisonous. Then when I showed up, he tried to play dead and rolled over on his back. It's amazing how much these guys can appear to be a cottonmouth complete with the mouth gaping, hissing etc. Anyway, once caught he was a real sweetheart. Almost tempts me to keep a snake as a pet again but they're better in the wild. This is a dark color phase Eastern Hog-nosed Snake, Heterodon platirhinos. Close up shot of the head with beautiful coarse scales and the typical turned up hog nose. These snakes prey almost exclusively on frogs and toads and have huge mouths.

Hog nose probably make the best pets of any snake. Very gentle and calm little dudes. Nice save Mel.

Brent, Garter Snakes are mean critters! Who ever told you otherwise was waiting for laughter. My exwife got bit by a Garter Snake, I did, my son did. They got in our house! It was like an invasion! I also thought they were passive. Nope. You are not alone.

Hognose snakes are probably one of the only snakes that absolutely won't bite, can't be made to bite. They are the coolest pets, I had a couple of them when I was a kid. One of them laid eggs and three months later I ended up with 26 baby hognose snakes. That one is really cool!! ...and yes, garter snakes are mean as hell!!

yeah garters are pretty mean but there bite is a joke .... lol i had one that would bite me for 3 minutes before letting go realizing its not hurting .but they will poop on u .....lol by the way noone should ever let a snake purposely bite them because even though they arent poisonous you could actually be allergic to the saliva and have problems .or bacteria ... .. theres been alot of new study"s on non poisonous snakes affecting some people in real bad ways ... but mine always bit me but my 2 hognose never did they just bluff.... thanks for the pics ...

Mr. Hognose has now been relocated to a beautiful site right next to a spring fed pond with lots of tall grass for cover, little intrusion by humans, soft earth for burrowing, frogs and toads for food and a cool limestone outcrop full of perfect snakey domiciles. May he or she grow old and prosper, find a handsome mate and crank out lots of baby crawlies......Mel

Mel, I was thinking that lil cutie would love to live in the area of the halfpipes you showed us last week. Come to think of it, so would I!
Glad you saved the critter.

Frankly I am no fan of snakes as you know and prefer them as boots, but I have to say that this one looks sort of cute, I am glad you saved him especially now having learned a little more about them.
