Found this on the beach in Coos Bay, OR a few days ago. The color matches the clay in the cliffs, but it feels like bone and the pattern reminds me of bone too. Any clues? Let me know if you need better pics. Thanks!~ Jo

Jo, if you have time, do a little research on what type of bone may be found in that area. It would be fun to know what kind of critter it came from.

Jo: Most the bone found on west coast beaches is Miocene age or thereabouts whalebone but I suppose there is always the chance for a big seal or other pinniped too. Your example does look a bit like some of the whalebone I've found....Mel

Nice piece of bone. There were many marine mammals during that time period, Huge dolphin-like and seal-like creatures.
