Does anyone have any suggestions on a few books I could purchase that would be good for someone just starting. Maby one on rock tumbling and one that illustrates the different types of rocks? Didn't know if there was a rock tumblers "bible" out there. Thanks.

I wanted the Encyclopedia of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones by Russell and Pellant but I couldn't get it because it was showing "out of print" so my mom (has a bookstore) ordered the Encyclopedia of Minerals instead and I sent it back. I don't know who the authors were but it was a nice coffee table book that wasn't going to help me at all. I got the National Audubon Society First Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals and I'm not sending it back but it is still not exactly what I was looking for. I'm not ordering any more unless someone highly recommends it. I need one that will help in identifying different types of rocks/gems/minerals not pictures of collector specimens. Something that has the different types of agates, jaspers, quartz, etc. with pictures. Any suggestions?

Hey all. I just picked up a really good book-"Handbook of ROCKS, MINERALS, & GEMSTONES"- author's name is Walter Schumann. Paid $22.oo at Barnes & Knoble. Very informative book. Text is kept to a minimum and it includes hardness, color, what group it falls into, where it comes from, etc. Lots of pics of rough and finished specimans. Also explains how to learn to identify rocks on your own. Anyone else have this book?

Hey Kim. I've actually been able to identify some of the beach rocks and other rocks I've been finding using the identification method described in the book. I'm sure you will too. Have fun.
