This slab has been preformed and I'm ready to cab it....... but.......it is only 1/8" thick and I can't dome both sides and.....I can't make up my mind which side should be the domed front side. I will be finishing the flat back side to the same polish standard as I always do but which one? ?? Side 1 (my favorite) Side 2 Your opinions and the reason for it, please. OH, and it is 4+ inches wide. Bob

Honestly, Bobby - may I call you that? Both sides are beautiful, but I prefer photo/side # 2. There is more of a distinction between the clear and dark areas. HOWEVER, you have the material in hand and have a better perspective than I. Good Luck.
Can't wait to see it finished. ;)S

Tough decision, indeed... I'd say to dome face #2, as the patterns are a bit more crisp there. I like the most the well defined white oval in the left-center, from where the blured dark spot emerges. I like it more than on the first side, where it is vice-versa.
Adrian
PS. If you manage to put a dome on such a big cab coming from such a thin slab, then your doming technique is out of this world!

Since the photos took awhile to resolve on my sorry server, I had thoroughly bonded with side 1 prior to seeing all of side 2. This may impact my preference. I prefer side 1 for precisely the same reason that the others prefer side two. The colors are very strong, and the diffusion of them in side 1 is more pleasing to my eye that the crispness in side 2. They have the same alien creatures in them, although the ones in side 1 are more obvious. Both sides are gorgeous. Certainly you have a high quality dilemma. Susan

I like side two because there is a prehistoric head of a dragon or reptile coming through the bowels of the earth, nosing up to a very fat baby bat. All of this is also in side one but side two also has angry mamma bat holding up baby bat by the left wing. You can't see mamma bat very well in side one.
Man, that is one beautiful cab in the making no matter what side you choose.

I like the second side too. I have a question for you Bob, how do you dome something so large yet so thin? How thin are the edges? I have trouble with a little flat in the very middle of the dome I just have not mastered doming large thin material. Thanks, Geoff

Both sides are beautiful. I think for something that large and thin, I'd look for a thin slab of clear quartz, and make a doublet out of it. Don

I prefer side 1 because of the additional things going on and the well defined spots in the white areas. But, is that a fracture at 3 o'clock on side 1? Maybe that's the deciding factor for side 2.

I'd say dome side 2, but there is no loser here.

Very nice piece on both sides. I am in the side 2 camp.

I'm liking side 2 just a bit more also. Although I do like the doublet idea. How about a triplet to get a nice high dome on both sides!

I really like side 1 so I am glad you are going with it. I think both sides will look great when you are done! Fran

How about a tapered edge so both can show with the right setting? Very nice either way. Karock

I vote for side 2. What a beautiful stone. Brazilian agate?

Yup, Side 2. Crisper pattern, maybe a bit more pattern too.

Thank you all for your insight, observations and opinions. 12 people like side 2 and four (plus me, of course) like side 1. So its decided for sure, maybe,....ER....Uh......side 1, OOPS I meant side 2. Hmmmm. It will be a while before I get around to cabbing it. My primary diamond grinding wheel (a plated 120 grit) has gotten to the point that it is grinding really slow so I'll have to wait a few days until I get a new one. Again, thank you for the input. Bob
