Hi,
I'm new to this site, new to the hobby and I'm going to need to read through tons of these topics and posts to get a good idea of where to start. I'm just starting to get the basics of tumbling and lapidary work, though I've been interested for years. I had a small "toy" tumbler when I was about 10 and didn't get through the first cycle. I was re-introduced again through the granite countertops I'd see through my cabinet making experiences as well as my younger brother's ventures into climbing.
As I said I'm a cabinet maker (joiner), currently apprenticing in the trade though I have 15 years of experience. I have had a long fascination with art, and besides wood turning and carving I also paint, sculpt and try to create things however I can. I also have a welding ticket and in the past enjoyed creating metal peices.
Eventually I would like to combine all three mediums into my art peices, wood, metal and stone, possibly looking towards acrylics and glass in the future. It'll be good to get to know you and learn from you!

Welcome to the board, Ryan. As stated, just ask away and someone may know the answer. Lots of knowledge and helpful people on here. If you can weld, you can braze and that is what silversmithing is. You can make your own settings for the rocks you are going to create into stunning pieces of art. Each stone is a work of art in itself. No two alike. Ken

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, I'm look so forward to getting underway! I'm going to DIY my first couple of machines from parts and tools I have, I don't have the bucks to get good stuff yet. I'm collecting as many rocks and smallish boulders that I can )before the snow covers everything) from a gravel bar in the Peace River here. I understand granite isn't everyones first choice, but there's a neat blue and black and red granite in the River here I've found a lot of so that's where I'll start. Talk to you all soon,
Ryan

Hello Ryan. Welcome to a very cool site. As a granite worker and artist you will be amazed how far people have taken this 'fine art' aspect of stonework. If you can find or buy rocks large enough to slab into tiles, that is another road you might enjoy. Check out the Nevada Royal Jasper website. They are mining some huge jasper boulders and I think making tiles with some of them. Good luck and again, welcome! -Chris.
