This is my first try at tumbling.. I think they turned out pretty good. These are Apache tears. Attachments:

Welcome aboard Jim. Way to go. You started out with one of the more difficult types of rock to tumble, and got a nice shine on them. Don

I think you did a great job. I've never tried Apache Tears but I know they have to be done alone. You did it the right way.

That's pretty much the opposite of how mine turned out! Great job... I'll redo mine without other rocks and try again later...

I started mine in the rotary... then finished them in the vibe with ceramics.

What was the magic formula for Apache tears? I have some I haven't tried to tumble yet as I've heard they might require some extra steps, sort of like Labradorite, which turned all chalky and white on my first attempt. Any advice on either?

Just remember that tears and other obsidian or even slag glass; you have to have cushioning in with them from the second stage on and to be honest, I put it in the first stage as well. Since tears are a natural glass, it is easy to chip them and when one gets a fracture, seems to set off a chain reaction. I tend to run them even longer, about 2 weeks without a grit change, in each step, checking every few days for gasses (glass, obsidian and other items can give off gasses and pop the top off your tumbler barrel) and just opening the lid, cleaning it off and putting it back on to continue the tumble, If the barrel feels hard and the bottom looks flat or is starting to bow out, you have some build up. Just take it slow and easy and they come out beautifully! Now labradorite....grrrr. I have not had a success with that yet. I guess I need to start experimenting with it again. Fran
