Howdy folks,
Well I skipped my Sunday ride and went yesterday so I could go to the highly advertised Llano, TX Gem show, gold panning, knap in and metal detecting spectacular. We drove an hour each way for a grand total of one knapping booth, three gold panning booths, a metal detector booth and a rock club booth. One other booth had a little rough with apache tears at $1 each rough. What a deal! *L*. Will never waste my day on that show again. It was really much ado about nothing. Weather was fine, the river was pretty and all the countryside as green as Ireland so at least we had a nice drive and also some spectacular breakfast burritos. Can't win them all......Mel

Well, at least you had some good scenery....It really sucks when it is a bad show. Fran

Well, I'm kinda glad it wasn't advertised here - I probably would have made the drive, only to be disappointed. Glad to know about it, though - thanks, Mel!

Hmmm. I was thinking to go to that show some time, but I'm all the way from Indianapolis!
The draw for me though is that I would love to get a small "boulder" or two of Llano granite. (the kind with the beautiful blue quartz inclusions).
Do you know if it is very easy to find around there?

Rockjam: I haven't hunted any myself for awhile but there used to be some right along the main road outside town. Wasn't the best quality though as it was pretty heavily weathered. It shows up at shows all over Texas though. I think I remember seeing some at both the Fredericksburg and San Antonio shows last year. I had a spectacular boulder that I gave to a buddy to cut a sphere from and then he was to give me back the scraps so I could cut them on my smaller saw. Never heard from him since *L*......Mel

yeah I'll be bringing the trailer again loaded with bloodstone, fancy jasper, obsidian and who knows what else! There were other guys with obsidian rough, lot of different agate/jasper slabs - place has a definate "rockhound" feel to it.

Very cool JR! I looked it up and last year it was about the second weekend in April. Do you know the 2011 dates?....Mel

I stopped on the way home after the Woodward Ranch bash year before last. I met a guy at the Antelope Inn in Alpine that told me he had just been to the sight and left a big boulder that he knew he could not pick. Drove right to where he said it was and sure enough there was the boulder sitting right where he told me lol. It was to big to pick up and I was be myself. What to do lol I rolled it down the small hill it the shoulder of the road with a thud. I backed the van up to it and rolled it over the bumper and into the van it sits in the front yard where I unloaded it still today. I collected about 150 to 200 lbs. of fist size chunks too. I guess you want too know where now. I will have to look and make sure about the road # I think it was 16 going north out of town its about 7 miles plus you cant miss it. Its a big pink road cut on both sides with a nice area to pull off. This is not easy rock hounding you need pry bars and wedges and big hammers lol.Now I will get a map and make sure it was 16. George I checked it was 16.
